Want a better life? Making love, making money, and making a difference can actually make for a more fulfilling life! And there is enough science to back this up!

We all want a fulfilling life. But we don’t always know how to achieve it. Scientific research may shed some light on what brings us greater satisfaction. And ultimately a more meaningful life.

The first element that makes life more fulfilling is of course, love! Our lives are that much richer when it is shared with people we deeply love. A Harvard Study of Adult Development tracked the lives of a group of men from different walks of life in the Boston area for a period of over seventy-five years.

The study found that “Good relationships keep us happier and healthier.” And it is not the number of our relationships but the quality of our relationships that add to the quality of our lives.

Both transformational coach Tony Robbins and relationship therapist Esther Perel (#ad) echo this sentiment, “The quality of your life ultimately depends on the quality of your relationships.”

What can you do to strengthen those ties? How can you nurture greater intimacy with the closest to you?

Make Money

Money touches (#ad) all aspects of our lives, even our loving relationshipsConflicts around the issue of money are one of the leading causes of divorce. Which brings me to the next ingredient for a fulfilling life — money.

Using data from the Gallup World Poll a 2018 study from Purdue University that to achieve emotional well-being, an individual needed to make between $60,000 to $75,000. And for greater satisfaction in life, individuals needed an annual income of $95,000.

While many people believe that money can’t buy happiness (#ad), it would be naïve to believe any of us could be happy if we could not even afford our next meal. But merely earning a high income at a soul-sucking job would kill any joy we could hope to get from life.

Does your job bring you the satisfaction you need? How can you improve the level of satisfaction you’re experiencing at work right now? Can you look at applying for a different role? Maybe add to your existing skills and apply for a different occupation.

If you are not getting the level of satisfaction you want from work and are not able at this point to get a different job, then look at volunteering your time to a cause close to your heart.

Make A Difference

The third ingredient for a fulfilling life is to find work that is satisfying. And one way we get that satisfaction is when we feel we are making a positive contribution to the lives of others.

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus expressed this well when he said, “Making money is happiness; making other people happy is a superhappiness” Science backs this up. Numerous studies have shown that helping others not only makes us feel good but can actually also make our lives more meaningful.

Bringing It All Together

If you want a fulfilling life, invest in your relationships — make love a priority. Secondly, find work that provides you a way to make a contribution to society.

And nurture a healthy relationship with money — so that even if you don’t have a job that pays you $60,000 a year, you can learn to add to your income by creating passive sources of revenue.

You can do this through a side hustle or receiving dividend income from making good investment choices.

Making love, making money, and making a difference can actually make for a more fulfilling life! And there is enough science to back this up!
